The following is an except from a Yeasayer concert review published in the Chicago Tribune:

"Yeasayer de-emphasizes rock conventions – rock power chords, heavy-handed drumming – in favor of influences drawn from hip-hop, world music and even disco. Nobody sounds quite like them, and it explains why the Brooklyn band has ascended so quickly, with a recent slot at the Coachella music festival in California and an upcoming appearance scheduled at Lollapalooza next August.

Abetted by two percussionists, the band underpinned its songs with lithe, agile polyrhtyhms – everything from hand-claps and cowbells to tambourines and wood blocks. Even “Mondegreen,” which featured a thundering back beat and heavy guitar, was more like a gospel shout-along than a straight-up rock song.

Each of the three core Yeasayer members stood at a keyboard atop a fluorescent stand, evoking the man-machine theatrics of German art-rockers Kraftwerk. The keys were tweaked and tickled with a sense of playful abandon, the tones dodging in and out in orchestrations that evoked everything from a paper-shredder to squealing monkeys. Wilder and Tuton alternated between guitar and bass, respectively, to play one-handed solos on the keys while Keating danced along the lip of the stage.

Soaring above it all was an intricate vocal drama, with Keating, Wilder and Tuton often pushing their voices into falsetto. Their stock in trade was swooning regret, a lover who suddenly finds himself on the outside looking in during “I Remember” and a rogue owning up to his bad behavior in the stirring “Madder Red.” Amid all the layers of exotica and experimentation, what prevailed was the very human sound of hearts breaking in three-part harmony."
